Inspiration and achievements

Sometimes we are just stitching away, day after day... another 20 twinkly 2in blocks for Diamond Hill here,

another 42 there...

hand stitching away in the evenings on the Secret Garden blocks...

and suddenly! Wham! There is a big difference in the look of the quilt you are making! Yippee!

All four blocks now have the diamond border and baskets added around each one.

I've just been making twinkly blocks whenever I can.

Even with these block edges done, there are lots more to make - effectively two borders worth.

Then I found I had enough twinkly diamonds to make two edges around these.

At this point, I am pretty chuffed to see it all laying out.

There are strips of purple to go between the blocks as sashing, and around the outside of that.

And I am not quite through making half of the diamond for the entire quilt. It is certainly a fitting name "Diamond Hill".

And as I stitch away at the mystery BOM Secret Garden by hand in the evenings, I am now contemplating the next set of instructions for it, which are pieced blocks with applique. And I am thinking of doing something 3 dimensional. I have set my quilt in Wonderland after all.

Tomorrow at social sewing group, I am keen to sash this quilt centre, and maybe even make a start on machine piecing the Secret Garden blocks. It's a good idea to try out something new and different when I'm not running after my darling 20 month old treasure.

Ooh, and we dropped into one of our local Botanic Gardens, and enjoyed the divine inspiration.

Plants breathing fresh air into us, and fresh ideas into us.

Check out young man's cactus shirt and frondy hat...

Ahhh.... deep breath in... the serenity!

Balancing homelife and stitching

Spending quality time with Young Mister is always the priority. Sometimes I can take some time out to sew, and other times, he needs his Mummy full on!

Yesterday he had a play date with 3 little girls. They all played well, shared everything, and all 3 mothers provided the same types of snacks, so they were all able to share food and toys. It was such a delight, despite being chilly enough here in the morning for long sleeves and long pants.

Such a visit also inspired me to redecorate the kitchen and living area which is kid friendly. Thoughts are whirling around my head for how to bling up on a budget. Nobody with toddlers expects to keep fine finishes immaculate anyway...

This morning was also cool. Check us out at the "Airing of the Quilts". 50 quilts on display at our local shop, and $5 per metre fabrics!! We were out with the sparrows (Bub gets us up at 7am or earlier, anyway), and as we were birds, we sure picked some good bargains at $5 per metre. I can feel some cushions for the living area coming on!

We don't really have quilt shows or exhibitions here in our town of about 190,000 people. So this was a little reminder of the quilty heaven I experienced living near Melbourne.

I was particularly taken with the stitchery designs in this one. I found the link to the pattern by smee.

These blocks were stitched by local quiltmaker Nikki.

I admire the humour in them, and would enjoy stitching them. Looks like a great handwork project for travelling where you only need one colour thread and the block traced off.

And I am inspired to make more humorous quilts. I just love humour and whimsy!

After all, I am creating for the enjoyment, why not enjoy the finished item?

Centre stage

Yesterday at the LQS Social Sewing class I put my head down and bum up, as we say here in Australia.

All 4 photos taken separately, and so vary in sizes in the pictures

Finally! All four centre blocks have their baskets on, the baskets were placed carefully, then each block was trimmed.

Then two edges of twinkles were added to each block.

Hurrah! They are all up to the same stage now.

I also made a prototype block to go next to the basket, and I am happy with those... And so, onto the next part!

Today I machine foundation pieced 27 more twinkles, and 36 half square triangle pairs. These need ironing and cutting down (trimming) before photography. I am hoping to get stuck into them tomorrow!

I am still happily hand embroidering the Secret Garden blocks in the evenings....

And today Secret Garden pattern part 5 came out. We are to make 40 4in blocks. Having no idea where they go, as it is a Mystery Quilt, I am enjoying the fresh ideas that are coming as to whether I reverse the background and contrast fabrics, or what to use for fabric fabrics, or whether to replace the background fabric (I purchased 3 different fabrics to use as the background). However. It makes no big difference insofar, as I am nowhere near finished block 4, and am back at the embellishing stage on the first 3! Oh! It brings me joy to keep nearing my goals on these two huge projects!

Creating away

What a busy week it has been!

So many ups and downs... so many projects going on... and transformation as moods and inclinations vary with turns in our lives... new priorities... new schedules.. so many changes to begin. Now.

And luckily, my quilting mojo is still here. Having worked through some kacky stuff this week, creating is still a happy place at the moment.

It's funny, when "stuff" happens, we need the comfort of our quilting, the soothing of the stitch, the caress of fresh cotton and prints... and yet, at those times, for some of us,  we cannot enjoy our sewing. I know I had a big break from regular stitching and blogging for a couple of years. You can see the number of finished projects on the side bar shrank drastically when I moved out of a house into a caravan.

Living in the moment, and enjoying my creating once again, I would like to share what I have been doing in the last week with 2 family birthdays.

The evolution of a princess fairy tale birthday cake for Miss 6.

5 cups of icing sugar and 250g of butter for the pink icing. Right there.

I only got these piping tools for Mother's Day. Perfect timing! Feeling so experimental!

all you need is the star piping tool... and a few hours!

After those easy looking cupcakes made last week with the purple star violets, I thought I'd just dive in!

swirly things on the ice cream cones - another 5 cups of icing sugar

silver cachous in the centre of each swirl, and sparkly dust on everything

a doorway, flowers, and princesses...

And more cupcakes for MIL's biggest morning tea party.

Then, for my sweetheart's birthday, there was a request for carrot and pecan cake.

Here it is topped in PLENTY of icing...

And "decorated" by the children. Hee Hee. 6yo and 7yo seem to think that decorating the cake is adding lollies....

As for stitching, I hope I can figure out when to Stop... but I am still embellishing Secret Garden block 3.

Haven't even finished laying down the fabrics for block 4 yet, and the new instructions will be out soon.

I am enjoying stitching. Wonderful! That makes everyone happy.

Love to you all.. xoxo

Hectic-icity

It's an incredibly busy week here, with my sweetheart's birthday, and our daughter turns 6, and it's MIL's Biggest Morning Tea this week as well.

Little bits of stitching are in order interspersed by huge bouts of baking. Haha! I love family life, despite its hecticicity. (I think I just made up that word, what a fun thing to say!)

A little bit of an Uh-Oh moment saw the start of embellishment on Secret Garden block 3.

adding the boingy bits out of the flower

Oh my! Will the embellishment ever end? It looks so, so good! I foresee returning to the original blocks also, to embellish and emphasise. It's going to be something that may need reigning in! We shall see.

Miss almost 6 took a batch of mini chocolate cupcakes to school for her classmates (a few days early, as my way of reminding the children to ask their parents to RSVP). Vanilla icing, purple flowers, leave tip and some hologramatic sprinkles. Sooo pretty!!! After "nailing" these beginners cupcakes (guess who got cupcake decorating tips for Mother's Day??), my plans for her party cake on Saturday have escalated. Eek!

these look a bit like violets... perhaps lavender flavour next time?

Sweetheart had a big weekend at karate grading, and found himself slightly incapacitated for a few days. While he enjoyed down time, and couch time with Bub, I found myself free to machine stitch!

lots of papers to remove

Another 34 twinkles made in one day!

out of purple background fabric... back to the shop next week

And on the next day, enough of them were joined to add two sides to each of the three remaining Diamond Hill applique blocks. These will be joined in a few days. It is crunch time in cake land here now.

These cupcakes are for MIL's Biggest Morning Tea on Saturday.

Master 7 added the ladybugs. Miss almost 6 added the silver cachous. Master 20 months dragged a chair over to the bench, stood on it, and ate 2 cupcakes while our backs were turned!!

Tomorrow I have Bub's swimming lessons, quilt show and tell coffee with a gf going overseas again on Tuesday, then grocery shopping, somehow bake 4 vanilla cakes for young Misses birthday cake design, and older children's swimming lessons! Eek! First cake will be in the oven before 8am.

Hope you are enjoying your week too!

Three weeks stitching in one day!

Ahhh... here in the subtropics, we are entering the dry season. The weather is cooler, we are enjoying wearing slippers on occasion, three quarter sleeves, or a cardigan, or long boots,  or maybe even jeans.

Totally unexpected was the steady rainfall we had yesterday, and again today. It's stopped at about 3pm today, and is unlikely to hang around.

I was lucky enough to make the most of it! My sweetheart took Bub out for a visit this morning, after the school dropoff, and I got to sit at the kitchen table with the sewing machine... I used the kitchen bench as a cutting mat, and even rested fabric on the stove top.

Earlier this week I calculated machine stitching for twinkly bits of Diamond Hill would take 5 months if I only made about 20 squares each week at social stitching. Yesterday while it rained and we stayed home, unable to work in the garden or the yard, and leaving the washing undone (it wouldn't dry anyway), another 20 squares were stitched.

Today I made another 34.

While Bub toddled around the kitchen, he did some drawings, and happily swapped his textas for more out of his big sister's pencilcase. He was so engrossed, I got to sew some more!

Having almost used up the 1 metre of dark purple purchased this week, I felt my mood shift, and it was time to think about basket fabrics for the applique blocks.

I liked these purples, but when I compared a photo of these (for perspective)

with a photo of these, I preferred the brights.

Then I tried to measure the actual width of the stripes so that I could rotary cut them. They need to match exactly with half square triangles in the border of the block. Ergh. They didn't have a measurement I could read on my rulers. I decided not to use the lovely brights in stripes after all.

I will use a triangle of fabric for the basket. I had a little rummage around - I need enough fabric for 8 of these baskets as there are 4 in the outermost border also. I have a lot of Kaffe fat quarters, but they wouldn't have been big enough. Hmm. What about this?

The colours are fabulous. It keeps up with the theme of Amethyst, Emeralds, Pearls in Diamond Hill... but the fabric might be too distracting.

Wait for it... That's much better when it's divided by twinkles.

I will give it a go.

I cut a large 9 inch square and cut it in half once so that I would have the grain running with the edge of the block. Then I drew on a stitching line 1/4 inch from the edge and tried to line it up with the (vague) markings I had made on the oversized applique block.

Machine stitched on, I started to trim the block, lining up the 45 degree line on a large square ruler with the basket, then I got cold feet. What if I was cutting it too small? How could I really check? The block is trimmed to the unfinished size of 18 1/2in square, and I wanted to align the basket in the right place to match up with the pieced twinkles around the edge.

I stuck pieces of baking paper together to make a transparent template. Positioned the basket over the basket line, then trimmed the block. Phew. I could see how far away the applique was from each edge, and I wasn't cutting off too much in any particular direction.

Okay, now that I've trimmed the block it's not all straight grain on the edges anymore, and I am supposed to add some pieced twinkle blocks before storing it (the edges can stretch so they need minimal handling).

I joined some of the twinkle blocks together, and stitched them along two sides.

I am using three different fairy frost fabrics to create the twinkles. Hopefully this will create movement across the quilt as the diamonds shine away with their pearly finish.

Feeling totally chuffed, I managed to sew about 3 weeks of social classes worth today.

Let's see: 34 foundation pieced blocks trimmed, one block trimmed and partially bordered. Strategies in place to tackle tricky bits. Yes, I'd count that as one super successful day, just because it rained!

Next: I think I will make more twinkly squares, as most of the ones made so far are with the pearly fabrics I am using least. Then I will get the other applique blocks bordered by the same amount before matching up the next bits. I need to do these while I remember!
